Curriculum, Instruction & Special Education

Welcome to the Department of Curriculum, Instruction, and Special Education at the University of Virginia School of Education and Human Development! In the CISE department, we offer a range of exciting programs for students interested in becoming a teacher, for current teachers interested in strengthening their expertise, for emerging leaders in instructional design and technology across multiple practice domains, or for students seeking a flexible degree program that can lead to a better understanding of the broad landscape surrounding curriculum, teaching, and learning in contemporary classrooms and in museum, adult training, and consumer education.

CISE department faculty work collaboratively to prepare individuals to work in America’s educational system, pre-K through 12 levels, as well as in the design of formal and informal learning employing a range of learning technologies.  We are committed to developing exemplary and innovative approaches to supporting teaching and learning in order to improve and enrich the schooling experiences of all students. We work with practitioners in schools, academic content experts, policy makers, technology innovators, and others to develop programs that prepare outstanding teachers, teacher educators, curriculum developers, researchers, instructional designers, and personnel who make a difference in the field of education.

Please explore our offerings to the right to find one that fits your background, interests, and professional goals!  We offer degree programs and areas of specialization across content areas (English Education, Social Studies Education, Math Education, Foreign Language Education, Science Education, Reading Education, Special Education) as well as practice domains (early childhood, special education, elementary, middle and secondary, gifted education, adult and instructional design generalists).  Online master’s degrees are available or in development in several areas (Reading, Curriculum & Instruction, Instructional Technology), with multiple online courses now available.
