Center for Race and Public Education in the South

This research center conducts and supports research and scholarship on issues that lie at the intersection of race, education and schooling in the southern United States.

Charlottesville Freedom School

In partnership with Charlottesville City Schools and Albemarle County Public Schools, CRPES hosts an annual Freedom School program for local elementary students. This free 5-week summer program is aimed at developing students' literacy skills through culturally relevant practices and community and civic engagement.

Teachers in the Movement

Educators were often at the forefront of social activism, yet their role and participation in the Civil Rights Movement has been largely ignored. This project focuses on oral history interviews with teachers and educators about their participation in and efforts during the Civil Rights Movement.

Educating for Democracy

Learning about the role of racism in the past can help disrupt and dismantle racism of the present. Along with its partners, CRPES created a suite of developmentally appropriate civic education materials focused on issues of race and justice in the United States, with an emphasis on civic discourse and history.

Mr. Edward Newton grew up in South Carolina in the 40s and 50s. After High School and serving in the military, he followed in his mother's footsteps and became a teacher and then an administrator.

Teacher-Student Incongruence in Perceptions of School Equity: Associations with Student Connectedness in Middle and High Schools

This study sought to explore congruence between teacher and student perceptions of school equity and how congruence or incongruence related to students' sense of connectedness to school.
