A Letter from the Dean

Welcome to the School of Education and Human Development!

At EHD, we share a bold vision: to be a catalyst for transformative change in education and health, grounded in evidence-based research, innovative teaching, and strong partnerships. Our mission extends beyond imparting knowledge—we are dedicated to empowering students to become leaders, educators, scholars, and practitioners capable of shaping and navigating a rapidly evolving world.

At the heart of our mission is our community—students, alumni, faculty, staff, and partners. Our shared connections are enriched by the unique perspectives and experiences each of us brings. It’s through this diversity that we fuel the creativity, innovation, and progress we strive for. Together, we are building a culture where diversity is not just valued, but essential to our success.

As a school, we are deeply connected to the communities we serve—locally in Charlottesville, across the Commonwealth, and globally. Through these partnerships, we are actively working toward a future that is more culturally responsive, equitable, and prepared to meet the diverse needs of those we support.

Academic excellence and discovery are hallmarks of EHD. In our nationally-ranked programs, students engage in meaningful dialogue, especially when conversations are challenging. This exchange of ideas is at the core of who we are, and it is through these discussions that we prepare students to thrive in a complex world. The research led by our faculty translates directly into real-world impact—advancing equity, reducing disparities, and improving education, health, and well-being across the lifespan.

To all our current and future students, whether you are on Grounds or learning online, I am thrilled to have you with us. Our faculty and staff are here to support you, helping you not only succeed but excel. I encourage you to stay connected, participate in the many opportunities available, and take full advantage of all that EHD and the University have to offer.

I am excited about what we will accomplish together and look forward to the journey ahead.

Sincerely,

Stephanie
