Biography
Ottilie Austin has worked with the reading education program since 1998 serving as associate director of reading outreach from 2005-2017, program coordinator from 2017-2019, and now serves as the coordinator of the C&I Ed.S. degree. Austin teaches online courses and advises students in the master’s and educational specialist programs.
Austin designed one of the first online courses for the school in 2000 and has been designing and teaching online courses since then. In addition to teaching online, she developed a series of online modules for the Reading First grant and produced a six-part video series, Put Reading First, for the VDOE as a component of the Reading First.
Areas of interest include reading and writing in the content areas, literacy leadership, and coaching, and developing high-quality online courses. She has presented at numerous state and national conferences and has published on adult learners and online instruction.
Austin served on the General Faculty Council from 2006-2009 as a representative for the School of Education and Human Development and the School of Professional Studies. She served as a faculty council representative on the EHD Faculty Council for the Department of Curriculum, Instruction and Special Education 2020-22.
Prior to working at the University of Virginia, Austin taught 5-7th grade and was an instructor at Piedmont Community College.
