Admission Requirements

Current UVA undergraduates interested in this major must apply to transfer to the School of Education and Human Development from the College of Arts and Sciences. Transfer students from other institutions should refer to the transfer student admission process to determine course requirements needed for your transfer application. This program does not accept applications from current high school students. For high school students interested in pursuing this major, application is first made for regular admission to UVA through the College of Arts and Sciences. Once at UVA, Students can then apply for transfer into this program in their first or second year of study.

Admission requirements that are specific to the B.S.Ed. in English as a second language program are listed below:

• Students must complete a course in English linguistics.
• Though not required, students with limited experience with other languages are encouraged to take world language coursework.
   

Third-Year Coursework

Third Year: Fall

• EDIS 2800: Understanding P-12 Educational Contexts*
• EDIS 4270: Teaching Reading and Writing to English Learners
• EDIS 3882: Field Placement – Secondary or EDIS 3888: Field Placement – ESL (2 credits, practicum)

*Students admitted for their second year will take EDIS 2800 course during their first semester of the major.

Students who have not completed the following must also take:

• EDLF 3180: Lifespan Development (students may substitute EDLF 3150 or EDLF 3170)
• EDIS 3020: Exceptional Learner

EDLF 3180 and EDIS 3020 can be completed during the fall or spring semester.

Third Year: Spring

• EDIS 3016: Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment for preK-12 and Secondary Education
• EDIS 4070: Designing Technology-Enhanced Solutions for Teaching (1 credit)
• EDIS 3888: Field Placement – ESL (2-credit practicum)

Prior to fourth-year, complete licensure training modules and take the Praxis English to Speakers of Other Languages exam.

Fourth Year: Fall

• EDIS 3030: Classroom Management for preK-12 and Secondary Education
• EDIS 4820: Assessment of and for Learning
• EDIS 4428: ESL Methods preK-12
• EDIS 4858: Content Area Seminar – ESL 
• EDIS 4868: Clinical Experience in ESL Education (6-credit half-time internship)

For Internship I, students are placed in a local classroom, working alongside a mentor teacher two days per week. Placements begin in mid-August and continue through the end of November. 

Fourth Year: Spring

• EDIS 4470: ESL Assessment and Curriculum Design
• EDIS 4878: Internship Seminar – ESL
• EDIS 4888: Teaching Internship – ESL Education (12-credit full-time internship)

In Internship II, also known as “student teaching,” students are placed in a new classroom. Students attend during contract hours every day from the first week of January to the end of April. Students may not take additional coursework during the final semester of study.
