The following fellowships are made available through the university's Graduate Education Initiative:

  • Presidential Fellowship: This funding is allocated to schools to enhance the funding packages of incoming graduate students in ways that strengthen recruitment in line with UVA’s mission and values. These fellowships increase the student’s support package by $7,000 annually for up to four years and a one-time research fund of $10,000.
  • Provost Fellowship: This funding is allocated to schools to enhance the funding packages of incoming graduate students in ways that strengthen recruitment in line with UVA’s mission and values. These fellowships increase the student’s support package by $5,000 annually for up to four years and a one-time research fund of $7,500.

All admitted Ph.D. students will be automatically considered for these awards. No additional application materials are required. Selection is based on a nomination process drawn from application materials, interviews, or other previous contacts with admitted Ph.D. students. Admitted students are evaluated in five categories including academic excellence, collaboration, mentoring, community engagement, and contributions to diversity or inclusion.

Recipients will be notified in the spring of each admission cycle via email.
