Breaking into the top 10 for the first time in more than two decades, the University of Virginia School of Education and Human Development landed at No. 8 in this year’s U.S. News and World Report rankings of the best graduate schools of education in the country.

In the 2024 rankings, UVA EHD jumped eight spots to tie for No. 8 with five other schools including Harvard University, New York University, and Stanford University. Among public institutions, the school tied for No. 4. It remains the No. 1 graduate school of education in Virginia.

“Every day, I see wonderful examples of the innovative work of our faculty, staff, students, and alumni to address some of the most pressing challenges in education and human development,” said Dean Stephanie Rowley. “I am delighted by this recognition, which speaks to the tremendous impact of their work."

In addition to the overall school rankings, all nine individual programs included in the rankings also landed in the top 20, with most improving their standing from last year:

  • Curriculum and Instruction (No. 18),
  • Educational Administration (No. 7),
  • Education Policy (No. 11),
  • Education Psychology: (No. 17),
  • Elementary Teacher Education (No. 10),
  • Higher Education (No. 18),
  • Secondary Teacher Education (No. 5),
  • Special Education (No. 4), and
  • Student Counseling (No. 13).

The annual rankings, released each spring, assess academic quality and research success through a combination of peer assessments and statistical data, such as research funding and acceptance rates.

In February, EHD tied for the No. 2 spot in the 2024 U.S. News and World Report rankings of online graduate education programs and was also named the top online education master’s program for veterans.
