Biography

As a faculty member, Melissa Levy's overarching goals are to foster community, nurture a sense of purpose, and cultivate spaces for growth and transformation. Levy's academic home is the youth and social innovation (YSI) degree, which prepares students to pursue work with or on behalf of youth, with an emphasis on the development and implementation of innovations that are informed by an understanding of both individual developmental and policy contexts. Her teaching frames the degree program (Introduction to YSI; YSI Capstone I & II) and prepares students to engage with youth and communities responsibly and effectively (Foundations of Community Engagement; Issues Facing Adolescent Girls, the course taken by mentors in the Young Women Leaders Program (YWLP)). As the YSI program area director and YWLP education coordinator, Levy advises and mentors undergraduate students considering the YSI major, students enrolled in her courses, students in YWLP, and students in the YSI major. Melissa Levy also mentors graduate students whose work and roles overlap with hers through teaching and research.
