Biography

Professor Flora earned a Ph.D. in Counselor Education and Supervision at the School of Education and Human Development (SEHD). While there, she coordinated the Personal and Career Development Center (PCDC) where she developed a passion for undergraduate student development. Professor Flora worked at Commerce Career Services and later with McIntire Business Edge students, where she gained practice and awareness about career development among the UVA student body.

In addition to training school counselors, her most recent focus has been preparing students for postsecondary career readiness. She created three elective courses designed to prepare undergraduate and graduate students for the next stages of their career.

Professor Flora has remained involved in the counseling profession through presentations, publications, and webinars at state and national levels. She holds three career development credentials: Certified Career Services Professional (CCSP), Global Career Development Facilitator (GCDF), and Facilitating Career Development Instructor (FCDi). She has twice served as president of the Virginia Career Development Association and is an ad hoc editor for the Career Development Quarterly. Most recently, she was Chair of the General Faculty Council. Professor Flora has participated on three local non-profit boards in support of arts education and career development.

As a student and a professor, Professor Flora’s work has been recognized with membership in the Raven’s Society and Omicron Delta Kappa, school and state doctoral awards, and a national award for Ethics (American Counselor Association). Students have acknowledged her teaching style for “creating a safe space that welcomes all students’ perspectives” (7 society) and through Lasting Legacy awards (SEHD).
