What We Do

Researchers are examining the effect of school working conditions on teacher retention, especially among effective teachers who decide to leave teaching in New York City.

School leadership, personnel practices, and the impact of working conditions on teachers' career decisions and school improvement

New York City, like many urban school systems, has a very high rate of teacher attrition, especially among teachers in schools with disproportionate numbers of poor and low-achieving students.  The focus of this work is the role that school leadership and teacher supports play in teacher retention decisions, especially among more effective teachers working in difficult-to-staff schools. This research is being supported by a grant from the National Science Foundation.
