Brian Irving

Brian A. Irving joins the UVA faculty from Louisiana State University, where he held the William Prescott Foster Professorship. His return to UVA is a homecoming: He completed his graduate training under Arthur Weltman, Glenn Gaesser, and Eugene Barrett.

A Fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine and a Certified Clinical Densitometrist, Irving brings more than two decades of experience bridging integrative human physiology, clinical measurement, and translational research. Irving also holds an affiliate appointment in the Robert M. Berne Cardiovascular Research Center in the School of Medicine and directs the Translational Exercise and Mitochondrial Performance Optimization Laboratory (TEMPO@UVA), where his team studies how skeletal muscle and heart mitochondria adapt to exercise, disease, and aging.
