Bernadette Poerio has a history of focusing on student-driven success. Following her graduation from Catholic University in 2014, she worked as a third-grade teacher in Memphis, Tennessee with the education reform program Teach For America. Shortly after her time with Teach for America concluded, Poerio attended University of Virginia's School of Education and Human Development to earn a master's degree in higher education administration and student affairs to work specifically with college students. For two years she worked at Piedmont Virginia Community College, first as an academic advisor and then as a career pathways coordinator, From 2018–2022 she was the school's online student support specialist and transitioned to her current role in July 2022.
