Biography
Mary Schmidt is a lifelong resident of New Orleans and an alumna of the University of Virginia's College of Arts and Sciences. After graduating from undergraduate and Tulane Law School, she was an attorney with Jones Walker, with a primary focus on complex commercial litigation. When her children were born, she retired to become a full-time mother. Her four children are all UVA alums and/or current students: Calder (COM ‘22), Conery (KINE ‘24, COM ‘25), Ellie (KINE ‘26), and Anna (KINE ‘28). Her husband, Justin, is a real estate attorney in New Orleans who focuses on land use matters.
Mary Schmidt is a past president of the UVA Club of New Orleans and the Virginia Club of Louisiana. She also served on the UVA Jefferson Scholars Louisiana Regional Selection Committee for many years. She is currently a member of the UVA Parents Council and was previously a member of EHD School’s Parent Leadership Council. She has hosted numerous UVA student send-offs and other UVA events at her home in New Orleans.
In addition to her volunteer work at UVA, Mary Schmidt has served in various volunteer capacities for dozens of philanthropic organizations in New Orleans. She was very involved in the schools her children attended, Isidore Newman School and Louise S. McGehee School. She also has served on numerous charitable boards. She is a past president and current board member of Herman-Grimma/Gallier Historic Houses, a current commission and vice-president of her neighborhood Security District, and she is a former board member of many other organizations, including Louise S. McGehee School, YMCA of Greater New Orleans, Friends of City Park, Preservation Resource Center, and Junior League of New Orleans.
