Biography

Bailey Carver (she/her) is a fourth-year from Amherst, VA.

What is your favorite EHD class?

My favorite EHD class has been Research for Youth Development. The course challenged me to think more critically about how research can be used to understand and respond to issues affecting young people. It also gave me the opportunity to explore topics that I care deeply about and ultimately inspired me to continue doing research through an independent study.

What are your plans after graduation?

After graduation, I hope to begin my career working directly with young people, ideally as a secondary school teacher. I am currently exploring opportunities that will allow me to grow as an educator while serving and learning from the community around me. Once I have a few years under my belt in the classroom, I would like to pursue a career in administration.

What activities are you involved in at UVA?

At UVA, I am a Resident Advisor, an EHD Ambassador, and president of Jubilate, a student choir at University Baptist Church. I work at an entirely student-run cafe, Saxbys! I have also served as an Orientation Leader and have been involved with programs focused on mentoring (YWLP), community engagement, and youth development. Many of the activities I have chosen at UVA center around building community, supporting other students, and working with young people.

Why EHD?

I chose EHD because I wanted an education that would prepare me to work meaningfully with young people while also pushing me to think critically about the systems and communities that shape their lives. The Youth & Social Innovation major has given me opportunities to connect what I learn in the classroom to research, community partnerships, and hands-on experiences. More than anything, EHD has helped me better understand the kind of educator and leader I want to become while surrounding me with faculty and peers who genuinely care about students and the communities they serve.
