A Letter from the Dean

Dean Stephanie Rowley sitting at her desk writing in a notebook and looking at the camera and smiling

Welcome to the School of Education and Human Development! I feel so honored to be part of a community of scholars who are pushing the boundaries with their curiosity, innovation, and dedication to the people around them.

The faculty, students, and alumni of the School of Education and Human Development is a community committed to serving others in inclusive, reciprocal, and justice-oriented ways. We are also passionate about contributing to a society of curious humans who welcome questions and conversation, poised for ethical decision-making in an increasingly complex world. Our nationally-ranked academic programs are training graduates to be ready for their field – classrooms, clinics, labs, and communities are better because of our students.

Academic rigor, learning and discovery remain core to our work. Faculty continue to be recognized for their research and scholarship – generating original knowledge and translating that into evidence-based practice.

As a community and through our many partnerships we promote systemic change by targeting traditionally marginalized and underserved communities. We are building a world we want to live in, committed to meeting the diverse needs of those we serve and improving our environments to be more culturally responsive and equitable.

I am excited about our work with our EHD community on moving many key initiatives forward over this next year including the development of our new strategic plan. It’s great to have students on Grounds this fall as well as those learning with us online. Thank you, again, for entrusting us with your education.

To our future students and families, deciding where to go to school is a big decision and you have many things to consider before making the right choice. Know that if you choose to come to the School of Education and Human Development, you have an important place here at UVA and within our school. We have a highly individualized approach to helping you achieve your goals. In choosing our school, you can expect a vibrant, collaborative, supportive, and creative environment, that will push you outside of your comfort zone. We will provide you with real-world, hands-on training opportunities. And our professors and mentors will guide you in evidence-based practices to best prepare you for your chosen career. The impact you will have on your students, athletes, clients, patients, co-workers, and leaders will transform the future of education and allied health. We can’t wait to meet you!

Please don’t hesitate to reach out. The faculty and staff at the School of Education and Human Development are ready to support you.

Sincerely,

Stephanie
