Maria is from Vienna, VA, originally from Guatemala. She is double-majoring in Speech Communication Disorders and Cognitive Science with a concentration in Linguistics.
My academic experience in the Education School has been enriching and supportive. I've gotten to enjoy smaller classroom sizes, which allow me to really get to know my professors and classmates, as well as take on more hands-on projects and experiences. My favorite part of the Education School is the community: everyone is so genuine and compassionate. Faculty want to see students succeed, and students want to make a positive impact in our society as future educators, leaders, health care workers, and more.
On Grounds, I'm involved with Pancakes for Parkinson's (Outreach Chair for Parkinson's Awareness), Sigma Kappa Sorority (Vice President of Alumni Relations, previously Activities Chair), NSSLHA/National Student Speech Language Hearing Association (member), Autism Allies (member), Outdoors Club (trip leader), Martha Jefferson Senior Living Community (volunteer), and the LatinX Student Alliance (member). I love anything and everything outdoors! Nature walks, kayaking, camping, rock climbing; I especially love to go hiking/backpacking, and am working toward my goal of visiting all the U.S. National Parks. I also really love plants, and am slowly building my plant collection.
After graduation I hope to attend graduate school to earn my master's in Speech Language Pathology in order to become a Speech Language Pathologist.
