Evaluation of the Third Coast Learning Collaborative
What We Do
The Third Coast Learning Collaborative is an inquiry-driven school model to create a unique educational experience by combining interdisciplinary project-based learning and portfolio-based, feedback-driven assessment.
Project Information
Project Status: Active
Funding Source: U.S. Department of Education, Education Innovation and Research (EIR) Program
Principal Investigator: Tara Hofkens
Partners: Human Restoration Project (HRP), Open Way Learning (OWL), Orchard View Middle School (OVMS), Reeths-Puffer Intermediate (RPI)
The project introduces an inquiry-driven school model called the Third Coast Learning Collaborative (TCLC). TCLC involves two key components: interdisciplinary project-based learning, where students work on hands-on projects that align across various integrated subjects, and portfolio-based, feedback-driven assessment, which moves away from traditional letter grades toward ongoing self-assessment and feedback.
Human Restoration Project (HRP) and Open Way Learning (OWL) will implement the model within Orchard View Middle School and Reeths-Puffer Intermediate School in Muskegon, Michigan. The UVA research team will serve as the evaluation partner, studying the model through a randomized controlled trial to assess the impact of TCLC compared to traditional curriculum within the same schools and grades.
