Virginia Early Childhood Consultation
What We Do
Virginia Early Childhood Consultation (VECC) supports high quality teacher-child interactions and social-emotional early learning environments. VECC services are available to Virginia early childhood programs that need additional support as indicated by the state's VQB5 quality rating system.
Who We Are
VECC builds on work from the Advancing Effective Interactions and Instruction (AEII) initiative and the Early Childhood Mental Health Consultation (ECMHC) pilot which supported early childhood programs with practices such as supporting children's social-emotional development, promoting positive teacher-child interactions and teacher-family collaboration, and reducing exclusionary discipline.

VECC services are provided based on program type and need. VECC provides two services in child care centers: 1) Leader-Focused Coaching to build leaders' knowledge and skills to promote relationships, teacher well-being and effective teacher-child interactions and 2) Classroom-Focused Coaching to build foundational class-wide interactions and social-emotional teaching practices, prevent challenging behaviors and improve teacher-child interactions. VECC provides Family Day Home-Focused Coaching to Family Day Home programs which incorporates key elements from both leader and classroom-focused coaching to support their unique structure and needs. Additionally, VECC provides Child-Focused Coaching (limited and as needed) to all program types to improve a child’s social-emotional skills, positive engagement, and reduce challenging behaviors, including through collaboration with families and direct supports (i.e., referrals).
