UVA Innovation Hub at Charlottesville Middle School

The UVA Innovation Hub at Charlottesville Middle School is a dynamic center for experiential learning that enriches the entire educational environment of the school.

Our mission is to engage all students in personally meaningful, computationally rich, and interdisciplinary learning experiences. With a vision to inspire curiosity, fuel innovation, and empower students to solve problems and pursue lifelong learning, the Innovation Hub aims to create a collaborative and inclusive educational space.

The UVA Innovation Hub at Charlottesville Middle School is one of two lab schools approved by the Virginia Board of Education in March of 2024.

Push-in Model: The Innovation Hub will serve all students at Charlottesville Middle School, using a push-in model. This model enriches the entire educational environment at Charlottesville Middle School by ensuring every student participates in the unique offerings of the UVA Innovation Hub.

Student Learning: Starting in 6th grade, students explore diverse interests and develop essential technical and real-world problem-solving skills. In 7th grade, they engage in interdisciplinary projects, and by 8th grade, they complete capstone projects that synthesize their learning.

Students engage in hands-on activities integrating computer science and data science, preparing them for the digital future and deepening their understanding of computational thinking.

Teacher Learning: UVA Innovation Hub Teacher Fellows engage in active learning experiences to leverage and sustain student resources in their classrooms while incorporating computationally-rich activities in their classrooms. Professional learning opportunities are ongoing through the year to develop a rich community of practice.

Guiding Principles

Computer science education, along with community-based partners provide the catalyst to engage students in personally meaningful learning experiences that deepen content-area understanding.

  • Developing a Community of Practice: Creating a collaborative environment where educators and students engage in interdisciplinary, project-based learning.
  • Engaging Students’ Voices and Choices: Fostering a sense of ownership and motivation by incorporating student input and allowing them to direct their own learning.
  • Making Meaningful Community Connections: Connecting students with community partners and industries, providing real-world problem-solving experiences, mentorship, and career exploration

Partnerships

The Innovation Hub is a partnership between Charlottesville City Schools, the UVA School of Education and Human Development, and the UVA Equity Center. The Innovation Hub connects students with industry and community partners, providing sponsorships, job shadowing, classroom guests, mentors, and real-world problem-solving opportunities. The UVA Equity Center ensures equitable learning experiences for all students and helps connect academic work to broader social justice issues.
