Members of the Curry School faculty have been accumulating a number of awards and accolades. Here’s a summary of the most recent.
Daphna Bassok
Daphna Bassok, associate professor and associate director of EdPolicyWorks, was 1 of 102 scientists & researchers awarded the Presidential Early Career Awards for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE) by President Obama, the highest honor bestowed by the United States Government on science and engineering professionals in the early stages of their independent research careers.
In addition, Bassok was the author of AERA’s 2016 Most Read Research Article, “Is Kindergarten the New First Grade?”
Jay Hertel
Jay will be receiving the "Most Distinguished Athletic Trainer Award" from the National Athletic Trainers' Association in June 2017.
Bob Pianta
Bob was ranked by Thomas-Reuters as 1 of 3,200 faculty members who has published the greatest number of highly cited papers in one of 21 broad fields, 2002-2012, calling these researchers "undoubtedly, among the most influential scientific minds of our time."
Jason Downer
Associate Professor Jason Downer was recognized with the 2016 American Psychological Association Mid-Career Award for Outstanding Contributions to Benefit Children, Youth, and Families. Downer serves both as the director for the Center for Advanced Study of Teaching and Learning and as the program director for the Clinical & School Psychology area of study.
Patrick Tolan
Professor Patrick Tolan was awarded 2016 Nicholas Hobbs Award from the American Psychological Association's Society for Child and Family Practice and Policy, in recognition of his contributions at the intersection of research and improving child mental health practice. Tolan directs Youth-Nex, the UVA Center to Promote Effective Youth Development.
Frackson Mumba and Robert H. Tai
Professors Frackson Mumba and Robert H. Tai were named co-editors of The Science Educator, the journal of the National Science Educator Leadership Foundation. Mumba and Tai both are science educators in the Curry School’s Teacher Education program.
Paul Harris
Paul Harris, assistant professor of Counselor Education, has been elected to the American School Counselors Association Board of Directors.
Michael Lyons
Michael Lyons, assistant professor in the Curry School’s Clinical & School Psychology program, was awarded an early career grant from the Society for the Study of School Psychology.
Derrick Alridge
Professor Derrick Alridge was awarded a $1 million Lyle Spencer Research grant for his continued work on the Teachers in the Movement project. Alridge is a member of the faculty in our Social Foundations program.
Rachel Wahl
Rachel Wahl, assistant professor in the Curry School’s Social Foundations program, was awarded a $50,000 Spencer Grant for her study, “Educating Against Violence: Can Dialogue Change Relations Between the Police and Communities of Color?
Peter Sheras
Peter Sheras was appointed to the Virginia Board of Psychology by Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe. Sheras, a professor in our Clinical & School Psychology program, serves as chair for Curry’s Department of Human Services.
Ben Castleman
Ben Castleman, assistant professor in the Curry School’s Education Policy program, was named one of the Sixteen Most Innovative People in Higher Ed by Washington Monthly. Castleman conducts research as part of the EdPolicyWorks faculty.
Nancy Deutsch
Nancy Deutsch has been selected as the editor of the Journal of Adolescent Research. She was also awarded the University of Virginia’s 2016 Student Council’s Distinguished Teaching Award, recognizing a teacher who makes a positive and lasting impact on the university. Deutsch, associate professor working with both the Educational Psychology-Applied Developmental Science program and the Research, Statistics & Evaluation program, plays a central role in both the Youth-Nex research center and UVA’s Young Women Leaders Program.
Sara Rimm-Kaufman
Sara Rimm-Kaufman has been awarded fellow status in the American Psychological Association "on the basis of evaluated evidence of outstanding contributions in the field of psychology."
Pam Tucker
Pam Tucker received the UCEA's 2016 Hanne Mawhinney Distinguished Service Award, recognizing her extraordinary commitment, excellence, leadership, productivity, generosity, and service to UCEA.
Robert Q. Berry III
This fall, Robert Berry has been elected President-elect of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics.
Steve Malin
Steve Malin was awarded 3 grants totally more than $200k to conduct research on exercise, diabetes and smoking cessation..
