EdPolicyWorks Researchers Led Over 21 Key Presentations at AEFP

Members from EdPolicyWorks, a research center examining educational policy and the implications for the workforce, will be embarking on Denver, CO for the annual meetings of the Association for Education Finance & Policy (AEFP) this week.

The 2016 conference theme is ‘the Perils of Research Irrelevance: Balancing Data Use Against Privacy Concerns.’ This theme recognizes the importance of high quality research for student achievement and connects it with practice and policy. The latest research on a wide spectrum of education topics, from pre-K to postsecondary, will be shared, along with vigorous debates about current reforms and policy directions.

Denver, COResearchers from EdPolicyWorks, from graduate students to professors, will be presenting their work in over 21 key presentations across the conference.

The cross-disciplinary research at EdPolicyWorks will be highlighted in some of the top presentations. For example, Kelli Bird, an Education Policy Ph.D candidate, will chair a session entitled “Experimental and Quasi-Experimental Analyses of Policies to Improve Postsecondary Access.” In this session, EdPolicyWorks post-doc, Kelly Rosinger, will present on “Designing Opportunity: No-loan Programs and Access to Selective Private Colleges.”

In another noteworthy session, EdPolicyWorks director, Jim Wyckoff, will chair a panel on “Creating and Using Information on Teacher Performance: Practical Realities of Design and Implementation in Teacher Evaluation.” Presenting in this session will be Mindy Adnot, also an Education Policy Ph.D candidate, on “Changes in Teachers’ Classroom Practice in Response to Incentives under the District of Columbia’s IMPACT Teacher Evaluation System.” Wyckoff and Adnot will be joined by EdPolicyWorks alumna, Allison Atteberry, now an assistant professor at the University of Colorado Boulder, who will serve as a discussant. 

EdPolicyWorks affiliates are also leading presentations, including Peter Youngs chairing a session on “Improving Teacher Evaluation Systems: Making the Most of Multiple Measures” where Julie Cohen presents work on “Observations on Evaluating Teacher Performance: Assessing the Strengths and Weaknesses of Classroom Observations and Value-Added Measures.”

Other noteworthy activities will be happening at the conference. EdPolicyWorks alumni and current assistant professor at West Point, Alex Smith, will receive an honorable mention for the 2016 Jean Flanigan Outstanding Dissertation Award. This prestigious award recognizes exemplary dissertation research in the area of education finance. Smith joins the ranks of others recognized by this award, including EdPolicyWorks alumni and current assistant professor at Notre Dame, Chloe Gibbs, from 2014.

Daphna Bassok, associate director of EdPolicyWorks, is a member of the 2016 AEFP Board of Directors and served as the awards co-chair. She will take an active role in the first general session and presentation of awards.

Other EdPolicyWorks researchers presenting at AEFP include faculty Luke Miller, Dan Player, Ben Castleman, Anisah Waite, and Daphna Bassok as well as graduate students Veronica Katz, Frank Perrone, Scott Latham, Zach Sullivan, Katharine Meyer, Aliza Husain, and Michael LaForest.

EdPolicyWorks is a joint collaboration between the Curry School of Education and the Frank Batten School of Leadership and Public Policy. EdPolicyWorks brings together researchers from across the University of Virginia and the State to focus on important questions of educational policy and implications for the workforce.
