2020 Connect Science Energy Institute Open for Registration

By Rachel Chapdelaine

Participants at the Connect Science Energy Institute will learn about effective social-emotional learning and teaching, service-learning and relevant content on energy and natural resources.

The Curry School of Education and Human Development’s Social Development Lab invites elementary school administrators and teachers grades 3-5 to attend its professional development training on Connect Science, a program that prepares teachers to provide students with a service-learning experience that integrates social-emotional learning and science content. The five-day training, called the Connect Science Energy Institute, will be held in January, February and March in Dedham, Massachusetts.

“Students learn science best when it is relevant to their lives,” said Sara Rimm-Kaufman, a professor at the Curry School and one of the developers of the Connect Science program. “Connect Science is a project-based learning approach that helps teachers facilitate lessons aligned with the Next Generation Science Standards. Not only do the lessons spark student interest in science, but they teach essential social and emotional skills as students work together to solve problems related to over-reliance on non-renewable resources.”

Participants at the Connect Science Energy Institute will learn about engaging and effective social and emotional learning and teaching, service-learning, and relevant science content focused on energy and natural resources. During the training, teachers also participate in several Connect Science lessons and discuss how to implement the curriculum with their students. Teachers leave the training well-equipped to use the 8- to 10-week Connect Science program.

“Over the past four years, our participants reported that the training materials were well organized and easy to use, they loved the opportunity to work with other teachers throughout the training, and they appreciated the time spent on modeling the lessons,” said Rimm-Kaufman.
