Antonio Brodie Jr. is looking to make his mark in both the education and business sectors by working on critical projects with African American stakeholders in mind.

Emma is from Hampton, Virginia, and is graduating with her bachelor’s degree in Youth and Social Innovation.

Inspired by her passion for the outdoors, Kate’s research centered on the benefits of nature for various mental illnesses.

“Ever since I can remember, working with youth has been in my personal plan for my career goals.” Maelee is from Chester, VA, and is graduating with her bachelor’s degree in Youth and Social Innovation, as well as her Master of Teaching in Elementary Education.

With a law degree in hand, Mathis’s passion for making higher education an equitable experience for all students brought him to the UVA School of Education and Human Development, where he will graduate with his Ph.D. this May.

"During my time at UVA I dove into helping the community." Graduating with a B.S.Ed. in May, Jordan was committed to giving back to the UVA and Charlottesville communities during her time as an undergrad.

“Choosing a career in education meant that I could change the narrative for BIPOC learners and provide them with a role model and mentor with whom they could connect.” Maryam is from Raleigh, N.C., and is graduating with her M.Ed. in Curriculum & Instruction.

For Katie MacDonald, an elementary school teacher in the Dominican Republic, earning her Master of Teaching from UVA has created new opportunities to impact the educational system in her community.

“Complexity does not necessarily define the most valuable research. What really matters is asking the right questions and framing the answers in the right light.” Daniel is graduating with a Ph.D. in Education Policy.

Full-time UVA undergrads and current teachers come together in a course to learn how meaningful relationships and advocacy are positive forces against the impact of childhood poverty.
