The University of Virginia’s School of Education and Human Development has achieved a new milestone, rising two spots to the No. 6 position in this year’s U.S. News & World Report rankings of the nation’s best graduate schools of education.

In the 2025 rankings, UVA EHD tied for No. 6 with eight other institutions, including Harvard University, New York University, and Northwestern University. Among public universities, UVA EHD is tied for No. 4. The school continues to hold the top spot as the best graduate school of education in Virginia.

“What makes UVA EHD stand out is the incredible community we’ve built together,” said Dean Stephanie Rowley. “This milestone is a direct result of the hard work, compassion, and collaboration of our amazing faculty, staff, and students.”

In addition to the overall school ranking, several individual programs at UVA EHD earned top marks:

  • Curriculum and Instruction – No. 21
  • Educational Administration – No. 11
  • Education Policy – No. 12
  • Educational Psychology – No. 16
  • Elementary Teacher Education – No. 10
  • Secondary Teacher Education – No. 14
  • Special Education – No. 5

The U.S. News rankings, released annually each spring, evaluate academic quality and research success through a combination of peer assessments and statistical data, such as research funding and acceptance rates.

Earlier this year, UVA EHD also earned a spot in the top 10 of U.S. News’ rankings of online graduate education programs, tying for No. 9. The school was ranked the No. 2 best online education master’s program for veterans, and four individual online programs were ranked in the top 10.
