News in Brief: Nevill Appointed by Governor to Autism Advisory Council
Autism researcher Rose Nevill will join the Virginia Autism Advisory Council as it works to coordinate services and resources for Virginians with autism.
Rose Nevill, research assistant professor at the UVA School of Education and Human Development, has been appointed to the Autism Advisory Council by Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin.
Nevill, who serves as director of the autism research core of the Supporting Transformative Autsim Research initiative at UVA, was appointed to the newly re-established council, according to a news advisory published by the Governor’s office. Her term extends through June 29, 2028.
The Autism Advisory Council operates within the legislative branch of the state government to “promote coordination of services and resources among agencies involved in the delivery of services to Virginians with autism spectrum disorders and to increase public awareness of such services and resources.”
Nevill focuses her research on enhancing evaluation and intervention for individuals with autism. Her current work includes evaluating mindfulness-based interventions for adults with autism and expanding autism training for first responders across Virginia. In April, Virginia passed a new law mandating all law enforcement officers be trained in autism by the end of the summer of 2027.
“This is a huge honor and incredible opportunity to lead statewide improvements to systems and services for people with autism across Virginia,” said Micah Mazurek, Novartis U.S. Foundation Professor of Education and director of STAR.
Dr. Beth Ellen Davis, a physician and professor of developmental pediatrics at the University of Virginia and faculty affiliate with STAR, is also on the council.
