Inspired by her personal experiences and mentors, Bridget Dinora is passionate about empowering others through communication and growing as a future speech-language pathologist.

Grace Pohlmann

It was her younger brother’s speech therapy journey that first sparked Bridget Dinora’s deep passion for helping others improve their communication skills. Graduating in May with a bachelor’s degree in speech communication disorders, Dinora has embraced every opportunity to grow by stepping outside of her comfort zone and pursuing new leadership opportunities on Grounds. This fall, she will attend graduate school at the University of Vermont, where she will continue pursuing her goal of becoming a speech-language pathologist.

Q: What inspired you to choose a career in speech-language pathology?

I was first introduced to the field of speech-language pathology through my younger brother, who attended weekly speech sessions for years due to developmental delays in his speech. I would often tag along with my parents to his appointments, which gave me a small glimpse into the world of speech-language pathology. This exposure sparked my interest in the field and ignited a love for working with people with disabilities.

In my senior year of high school, I chose to shadow a speech-language pathologist for my capstone project, and I truly loved every minute of the experience. I always knew that I wanted to work directly with people, especially children, and my shadowing experience confirmed that I wanted to pursue a career in speech-language pathology.

Q: Why did you choose the UVA School of Education & Human Development for your program of study?

I initially chose the UVA School of Education and Human Development because I knew it offered a strong program in speech communication disorders that would equip me with the skills needed to become an effective and compassionate speech-language pathologist. What I did not anticipate was just how many opportunities EHD would provide for me to grow beyond the classroom. From the moment I joined the school, I found countless ways to engage with my new community, allowing me to build a support system of trusted professors and mentors. Every day, I am encouraged to push beyond my comfort zone, not only becoming a better student but also a more well-rounded person. I deeply appreciate how the EHD faculty and staff treat me as an individual rather than just a number, creating an environment where I can truly thrive.

Q: What is the most significant thing that has shaped your time here?

Dr. Filip Loncke, who was initially my advisor in the speech communication disorders program, has been fundamental to my experience at EHD. From the moment I joined the program, he provided the guidance and support I needed to acclimate to my new environment and take full advantage of the opportunities available to me. Over the past two years, his support has been unwavering, and I credit much of my success to his mentorship. Before coming to UVA, I never felt that I had a true mentor, but Dr. Loncke has become the most impactful professor I have ever had. I now realize how meaningful it is to have someone in my corner—believing in me and supporting me the way he has. I am beyond grateful for the opportunity to learn and grow under his guidance!

Q: What is one thing you learned in your studies that really took you by surprise?

One of the most valuable lessons I have learned during my time at EHD is the importance of pushing yourself outside of your comfort zone. When I started college, I never imagined myself as someone who would enjoy and actively seek out opportunities to join new organizations and meet new people. Now, looking back, I can confidently say that stepping outside of my comfort zone has made my UVA experience truly memorable.

Becoming a representative for EHD on the University Judiciary Committee, joining the Class of 2026 Class Council, and serving on last year’s Lighting of the Lawn Committee have allowed me to immerse myself deeply in the broader university community. Through these experiences, I have met so many wonderful, interesting, and compassionate people. I have learned the value of exploring new interests and seeking out new experiences, which has helped me grow into a more well-rounded and fulfilled person.

Always take the leap and try something new, even if it scares you. One day, you will look back and thank yourself for embracing the adventure!

Q: What is coming next for you after graduation?

After graduation, I plan to attend graduate school at the University of Vermont to continue my path toward becoming a speech-language pathologist. I am super excited to take this next step in my professional journey, and I am looking forward to beginning a new chapter in such a beautiful place!
