Presentation Description: School discipline disparities are an enduring racial justice issue in U.S. education (Welsh & Little, 2018). Though Black boys, and girls each make up 8% of the K-12 school population they represent 25% and 15% of students receiving out-of-school suspensions, respectively (U.S. Department of Education, 2018). These disparities start in pre-school where overall rates of exclusionary school discipline are much higher than K-12 schools (Gilliam, 2005; Skiba et al., 2011; Skiba, Chung, et al., 2014). This study draws on the cultural synchrony hypothesis, and informant discrepancy theory and research to examine the explanatory role of teacher-student race match, teacher-parent cultural (a)synchrony in the association between teacher factors and exclusionary school discipline in a diverse sample of preschool children primarily from low-income backgrounds. In this YN WIP, Dr. Smith will present ideas from and solicit feedback on an upcoming grant submission.
