Teachers in the Movement: From Past to Present
Join us for the fourth Annual Teachers in the Movement Summer Teachers Institute! The TIM Institute is a collaborative space for educators to create community, gain inspiration, and affirm our commitments to the teaching of African American history. The 2021 institute emphasizes the pedagogical uses of oral history, storytelling, and historical counter-narratives. These approaches illuminate and honor the Black American experience while also complicating and providing a fuller and more robust American history. We will also engage music as a form of oral history and storytelling through critical examination and reflection of how music can be implemented in the curriculum and other educational spaces. At the end of the institute, participants will leave with pedagogical ideas, curriculum resources, readings, primary sources, and a “soundtrack.” It is our hope participants of this year’s TIM Institute will feel empowered to incorporate oral history and historical counter-narratives within their respective educational spaces, which has implications for not only the ways in which we think and teach about history but also the ways in which we think and teach about our present historical moment.
