Enlivening Critical Translingual Literacies Through Linguistically Diverse Picturebooks: Implications for Research and Practice

Angie Zapata, Associate Professor at the University of Missouri, will present a Cooper Lecture on Wednesday, October 2 in Holloway Hall from 11:00 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. Through collaborative inquiry partnerships with practicing PK-12 teachers, Dr. Zapata's research highlights classroom language and literacy experiences featuring picturebooks with diverse racial, linguistic, and ethnic representation, and how/what translingual and transmodal literacies are produced in these moments.

Her research and teaching contributions have been recognized as a recipient of the Early Career Research Award from the National Council of Teachers of English Children’s Literature Assembly and the National Council of Research in Language and Literacies Mid-Career Scholar. Most recently, she has been awarded the National Council of Teachers of English 2024 Outstanding Elementary Educator in English Language Arts, recognizing her research contribution that directly impact classroom practice.
