The Impact of COVID-19 on English Learners Project

The Impact of COVID-19 on English Learners project is a partnership between Researchers at UVA and the VDOE on a multi-year researcher-practitioner project to measure the impact of COVID-19 on Virginia’s public schools. A variety of student outcomes are being explored including those of ELs. VDOE is keenly interested in understanding how COVID-19 impacted the enrollment patterns of ELs, the identification and exiting of students from EL services, their English proficiency gains as measured by the WIDA ACCESS assessment, and their performance on the Commonwealth’s Standards of Learning exams. This project offers the EL-VEST fellow a rich opportunity to engage in an established researcher-practitioner partnership to address one of VDOE’s pressing needs and, simultaneously, fill an important gap in our knowledge about the pandemic. The fellow will work with the research team to design and execute a quasi-experimental study that leverages both longitudinal data from the Virginia Longitudinal Data System and detailed information on school operations during the pandemic (e.g., EL learning modality, supports for remote instruction, etc.) which the research team has assembled.
