Curry Equity, Inclusion, and Social Justice Initiative 2019-2020
In the 2019-2020 academic year, the Curry School of Education and Human Development will focus on the development of high-quality and impactful student learning outcomes (SLOs) and related assessments to ensure the meaningful incorporation of content related to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) across all Curry programs. To this end, Curry’s Office of Assessment has developed materials to facilitate the development of such SLOs and assessments. These include example SLOs for DEI that can be adapted for use across Curry programs, as well as rubrics for use in the assessment of student mastery of DEI SLOs, and additional materials such as those presented at the 2019 faculty retreat on August 30, 2019 to provide background and context for this initiative. These resources are listed in the sections below. For questions about this initiative, feel free to reach out to Mandy Turner, Curry Director of Assessment, at [email protected], or Catherine Brighton, Associate Dean for Academic Programs and Student Affairs, at [email protected].

- Diversity: diversity includes all the ways in which individuals or groups differ and recognizes everyone and every group as part of diversity that should be valued. A broad definition includes identities such as race, ethnicity, gender, national origin, religion, ability, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, language, and physical appearance.
- Equity: the guarantee of fair treatment, access, opportunity and advancement for all, while at the same time striving to identify and eliminate barriers (e.g., policies, practices, attitudes, and cultural messages) that have prevented the full participation of historically underserved and underrepresented populations. Equity is also defined as the absence of disparities that are systematically associated with social advantage/disadvantage.
- Inclusion: the act of creating environments in which any individual or group can be and feel welcomed, respected, supported, and valued to fully participate. Inclusion involves authentically bringing traditionally excluded individuals and/or groups into processes, activities, and decision/policy making in a way that shares power.
