Scholarships, Fellowships, & Awards
Each year the Foundation grants awards, scholarships, and fellowships to support the studies of students in the School of Education and Human Development (EHD).
The linked list includes monetary and honorary awards, scholarships, and fellowships open to students from any department in EHD and the criteria for each honor. Awards, scholarships, and fellowships are given in the form of financial aid processed through the Student Information System.
Additional Foundation awards and scholarships are also granted at the Department and Program level (listed below under Department Specific Awards). Reach out to your program area director or your department’s administrative staff for more information regarding these opportunities.
Nomination Process and Materials
EHD faculty may nominate students or EHD students may self-nominate for the listed opportunities. Nomination materials are due the first Friday in January and students are informed of decisions in mid-to-late March.
- EHD-wide Scholarship, Fellowship and Awards Student Application Form- students must complete an electronic application form and indicate the award/scholarship(s) for which they would like to be considered. For a hard copy of what is included in the Application Form, please CLICK HERE .
- The link to the form will be sent out via EHD communication mechanisms (e.g., EHD-student listserv, Canvas announcements) by early November each year. A nominating faculty member may also send the link directly to a student.
- Please note: The form requires students to provide the name and email address of a UVa employee (e.g., faculty, staff, supervisor) who has agreed to write a letter of recommendation for the student should the award/scholarship require a letter. Students should reach out to their desired recommender before submitting this form.
Letter of Recommendation
A letter of recommendation must be submitted on behalf of the student by a UVa faculty or staff member for most awards*. The letter should speak to the merits of the student and specifically address, in detail, how the student meets the criteria for the award/scholarship(s). Letters weigh heavily in the scholarship/award decision process.
Upon submitting the application form, an email from “from “Dana Stanley via Smartsheet” will be sent to the recommender’s email address indicated in the form. The email includes a link that will allow them to upload the recommendation letter. Bi-weekly reminders will be sent to the recommender until the letter is submitted.
The student will receive an email from “Dana Stanley via Smartsheet” once the letter of recommendation has been uploaded by the recommender.
*Letter of recommendation is not required for the Asa B. Johnson, Jr., Scholarship, the Jessie C. Carpenter Award, and the Snyder-Crumpacker Graduate Fellowship
Should you receive an award, scholarship, or fellowship from the Foundation, you will be expected to write a note of appreciation to living donors.
