Biography

Isabel Vargas works alongside Emily Solari as part of the Virginia is for Leaders: Development of Experts in Evidence-based Literacy (DEEL) Practices for Students with Disabilities training grant. She is a member of the Virginia Literacy Partnership team developing a preK to grade 3 English and Spanish language and literacy screener. Additionally, Vargas works as a doctoral fellow at the Equity Center at the University of Virginia helping to develop educational programs aimed at serving multilingual students. Prior to pursuing her Ph.D., Vargas worked as a first and second-grade teacher in a dual-language Spanish immersion program. Her research interests revolve around multilingual learners, including evidence-based literacy instruction for linguistically diverse students, the misidentification of multilingual students in special education, and bilingual education.
